About the museum

The Bezirksmuseum Meidling is regarded as the oldest of its kind in Vienna. It was founded in 1923 as the "Meidlinger Heimatmuseum" by a circle of committed citizens around school inspector Karl Hilscher. Among the founding members were not only businesspeople but also artists such as Anton Hanak and Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel and politicians such as Otto Glöckel. From the start it included a gallery that supported local artists; their donations built up a collection of paintings, drawings and prints. The museum is run by a support association whose president is always the district head, and the museum work is done by volunteers.

The collection moved from school to school for a long time – from Singrienergasse via Bischoffgasse and Nymphengasse to Kobingergasse – and was relocated to Lower Austria for protection during the Second World War. Since 1997 the museum has been housed in the school complex at Längenfeldgasse 13–15, which was expanded at that time together with the Volkshochschule Meidling.

Today it has about 700 m² of exhibition space, a large special exhibition room, a storage depot and a darkroom. The permanent exhibition ranges from fossils and small finds from prehistory and Roman times – including a Roman nymph stone found on Meidling soil in 1853 – through crafts, working life and everyday life to clubs and entertainment venues such as Weigl, Tivoli and the Meidlinger Theater. A dedicated section commemorates the folk singer Carl Lorens and the piano comedian Hermann Leopoldi.
