About the museum
The Bezirksmuseum Neubau goes back to an initiative of the folk song researcher Georg Kotek and was founded on 19 September 1966. At first it was housed in a room of the district administration; since 1 April 1978 it has been located in the Amerlinghaus, one of the oldest buildings on the Spittelberg, which was once considered a disreputable entertainment quarter.
At around 100 m² it is the smallest of the Vienna district museums. Since 2019, a team of about 30 volunteers under the direction of Monika Grußmann has been working on exhibitions, events and the archive. The museum space is divided into three zones: a larger room for changing exhibitions, an area in which a show on the silk industry is being developed based on the Biedermeier diary of a manufacturer's wife from the Brillantengrund, and a “Room of Small Things” with objects on the district's history.
The historic sales counter of a paint dealer from Burggasse also stands there, where visitors can get espresso. Since autumn 2025, a compact permanent exhibition has shown the four large department stores of Mariahilfer Straße: Herzmansky, Gerngroß, Esders and Zentralpalast. In spring, the “Peep Museum” lets you watch silkworms transform through a keyhole. In 2026 the museum celebrates its 60th anniversary.
