About the museum

Kunsthalle Wien was founded in 1992 and started in a makeshift space: a yellow exhibition container by Adolf Krischanitz at Karlsplatz with approximately 1,000 square meters of space. The initially controversial building shaped the city's appearance and gave Vienna's exhibition scene new impetus.

In May 2001 the institution moved into its main building at MuseumsQuartier. Architects Ortner & Ortner supplemented the former Winter Riding Hall of the court stables with a new building with two differently proportioned halls; in the main courtyard the house stands between Leopold Museum and mumok.

At Karlsplatz the container gave way in 2001 to a smaller glass pavilion, also by Krischanitz, which continues to host exhibitions and events.

Kunstthalle Wien has no own collection but shows changing exhibitions of contemporary art with international program and local reference, accompanied by education, workshops and events. The city of Vienna Art GmbH is the operator.
