About the museum
Klammstein Castle stands about 60 metres above the Gasteiner Strasse at the entrance to the Gastein Valley and is considered the oldest building in the valley; prehistoric finds show that the site was settled very early. The hilltop castle was built in the High Middle Ages to secure the valley and, after several changes of ownership, passed to the Archbishopric of Salzburg at the end of the 13th century.
With the rise of Gastein ore mining, the castle became an administrative seat: an archiepiscopal Pfleger (steward) managed the mines from here and exercised jurisdiction until the 16th century. After that the complex lost its importance, was abandoned and used as a quarry; during the construction of the Tauern Railway at the beginning of the 20th century, the ruin suffered further damage.
From 1972, Adolf Ferner, who had acquired the ruin, had the tower restored. Today a museum in the main tower shows the history of the castle and items from the Ferner family's collection. The family leads visitors through the complex on regular castle tours and runs the castle tavern, where knight's feasts and celebrations take place by prior booking.
