About the museum

The museum's building, the Wallnerbauernhaus from Schwarzach, dates from 1738. In 1988 it was dismantled and rebuilt faithfully at its present site. Today it serves as a museum as well as a venue for meetings and events. Together with a granary (Troadkasten), a bread oven, a mill and a school garden, it forms a small ensemble.

The exhibition leads through the parlour, the smoke kitchen, the bedroom and the attic, showing how people lived and farmed in the countryside in the past. A second section tells the story of a roughly 4,000-year journey through time, from the Stone Age through the first fortified settlements and Bronze Age graves to copper mining, which was carried out in St. Veit in three phases from the Early Bronze Age until 1875. Finds and mining methods are on display; the museum is part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Ore of the Alps.

Another theme is the persecution of Protestants in 1731/32 and the Salt-Licker Oath of Schwarzach. Two exhibition rooms are dedicated to the writer Thomas Bernhard, who spent part of his youth at the Grafenhof lung sanatorium and later visited for decades. The museum is run by the Museumsverein St. Veit, which also operates the Sunnpau show mine.
