About the museum

Burg Aggstein, approximately 150 meters long, sits on a rock spur about 300 meters above the right bank of the Danube in the Wachau. Its oldest walls today are dated around 1200; for long it was associated with the Kuenringers, a powerful ministerial family with several castles in the region. After repeated sieges, only foundations remained from this early period at the so-called Bürgl.

In the 15th century Jörg Scheck vom Wald rebuilt the destroyed castle. Large parts of the palace, women's tower and Gothic chapel date to him, as does the rock prison known as 'Rosengärtlein', around which legends still swirl today. In 1529 Ottoman troops burned the castle; from 1606 Anna von Polheim-Parz renewed it in Renaissance style, but after her death it fell into disrepair.

First consolidation work on the ruin began in the 19th century, further work from 1930. Comprehensive revitalization in 2003 restored walkways, viewpoints and the knights' hall. Today the castle ruin offers tours, audio tours for adults and children, and events such as castle advent.
