About the museum
As early as 1879, Melk's municipal council decided to set up a museum; in 1880 the first display cases were installed in the town hall. The pharmacist Franz Xaver Linde contributed significantly to building up the collection. In the following decades it moved several times, including to a pharmacy, to Melk Abbey and to a brewery, and it reopened after the war in 1946.
In 1959 the "Melker Heimatmuseum" opened in the building of the former post office on Linzer Straße. A cultural and museum association founded in 1985 ran it until 2013. Today the municipality looks after the museum and the town archive.
The current exhibition is devoted to the prehistory and early history of Melk; among its best-known pieces is the roughly 6,500-year-old "Idol with a Bird's Face". The town is also planning a new town museum in the former cinema at Linzer Straße 7, which is to show the history of Melk from prehistoric times to the present as well as the history of cinema.
