About the museum
Maria Langegg developed into a pilgrimage site around 1600, when the Salzburg estate steward Matthäus Häring fulfilled a vow after a child's recovery and had a chapel built. In 1645 the Servites took over the care of the pilgrims. Between 1652 and 1734 they built the three monastery wings, including the north wing with the library, and between 1765 and 1773 they had today's pilgrimage church rebuilt. The original chapel was preserved as the origin chapel.
In 1974 the Servites left the site. The Community of the Beatitudes then used the monastery until autumn 2022. After they moved out, the pilgrimage museum was initially closed. Today Maria Langegg belongs to the Mautern parish association. The Diocese of St. Pölten, as owner, together with the parish and the Association of Friends of the Pilgrimage Church, makes it possible to visit the museum again on set guided-tour days.
The tour shows charters and votive paintings from the 17th to the 20th century, which tell of plague, natural disasters and personal fates, as well as the history of the Servite Order. The museum includes the original monastery library with more than 6,000 books, and the treasury.
