About the museum

The operetta composer Carl Zeller (1842–1898), creator of “Der Vogelhändler”, was born in St. Peter in der Au. As early as 1934 the local choirmaster set up a first memorial room, after the composer's son had given the men's choir manuscripts, photos and documents from the estate. After the war the collection was for a time considered lost, but it resurfaced in 1965.

On 13 June 1992, Zeller's 150th birthday, the museum was ceremonially opened in his birthplace on the market square. In 2001 previously unknown original manuscripts were discovered, including two sketchbooks; in 2002 an exhibition at the castle showed these finds for the first time. In 2009 the entire collection moved to the castle, was inventoried and digitised, and was redesigned according to a new concept.

Opened in 2013, the museum sees itself as a modern musician's museum. On display are original manuscripts, youthful compositions, a piano score of the opera “Die Fornarina”, letters, dedications, awards, premiere posters and role photos. Several multimedia stations with audio and film examples bring Zeller's entire oeuvre to life. Visits are possible individually or with a guided tour.
