About the museum
The core of the collection consisted of finds gathered in Wallsee from 1889 by the archivist Carl Samwer and later by the primary school headmaster Elmar Tscholl. Tscholl played a major part in the discovery of the Roman cohort fort on the Danube bank in 1966. Since then, the military camp and the associated civilian settlement on the Noricum Danube Limes have been traceable archaeologically.
To preserve and display the finds, the Museumsverein Wallsee was founded in May 1991. In 1997 the association opened the Römermuseum in the so-called Salzhaus at the edge of the market square, opposite the park of Wallsee Castle. Four exhibition rooms tell the story of the Limes, the life of the garrison troops, belief and the cult of the dead, as well as trade and the everyday life of the population. Particularly notable are fragments of huge Roman bowls and a brick with a fish head scratched into it, regarded as an early testimony to Christianity in the region.
Today the museum is part of a trio of Römermuseum, Römerort and Römerwelt. Roman traces are visible in the village centre at the market square, and in the Römerwelt a room-filling projection brings to life the late antique small fort of the 5th century. Since 2021 the Wallsee fort has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Frontiers of the Roman Empire – Danube Limes (Western Segment)". The museum association runs all guided tours on a voluntary basis.
