About the museum
Ulmerfeld is first mentioned in 995, when King Otto III granted the place to the Diocese of Freising. From the late 12th century the bishops had a castle built here, whose mighty defensive tower is still visible from far away today. In the 14th century the complex was expanded into the administrative centre of the Freising lordship; the Gothic castle chapel with its wall paintings dates from this period. A columned hall and an arcaded courtyard complete the ensemble, which was rebuilt several times.
With secularisation in 1803 the Freising rule ended, and later the castle belonged to an industrial company. In 1975 the town municipality of Amstetten acquired the complex. Today it houses, among other things, a youth hostel, rehearsal rooms and event spaces; the castle is operated by AVB Kultur & Freizeit GmbH.
The west wing and the tower house a local history museum and the historical weapons collection of the Amstetten armourer Ernst Urschitz, which with over 400 pieces extends from the Hallstatt period to the early 19th century. In addition there are exhibitions on contemporary art and on regional natural landscapes, in 2026 for example the show "Am Fluss" about the Ybbs. In summer, concerts take place in the arcaded courtyard.
