About the museum
The three-storey late Gothic gate tower, known in Lilienfeld as the Dienerturm, once guarded the crossing over the Traisen in the Dörfl district; until 1789 the road ran right through the gate. Later, rooms in the annex also served as detention cells, whose window bars are still preserved.
Since 1960 the tower has housed the regional museum, which for a long time operated as the district local history museum. It tells the history of the Traisen and Gölsen valleys: from silver and coal mining through metalworking and woodworking to the pilgrimage road to Mariazell, and natural history with minerals, fossils and an insect collection. A historic weaving room and evidence of postal history are also part of it.
The focus is the Zdarsky Ski Museum. Mathias Zdarsky developed alpine ski technique in Lilienfeld from the 1890s onwards; historic winter sports equipment traces this development, and a “Street of Winners” shows original racing skis of well-known Austrian skiers.
In 2024 the listed tower underwent comprehensive renovation: a new entrance, opened-up walls and a redesigned slope terrace bring more light into the building, and a gallery was also created as a future display storage area. Following the opening of the museum and culture tower in 2025, the exhibition is being refurnished step by step.
