About the museum

The foundation was laid by the management consultant Johann Hasenauer with a pewter tankard that he was given as a gift while studying in England. Over about 40 years he gathered historic drinking vessels from the style periods from the Renaissance to Art Deco, mostly originals. In 2004 he decided to show part of them publicly, trained as a museum curator and looked for a location for the first museum of its kind in Austria.

The choice fell on Hainfeld, an old brewing town in the Mostviertel whose brewery has existed since 1757. With the support of the municipality, the NÖ-Stadterneuerung (Lower Austrian urban renewal) and committed private individuals, the museum was opened on 6 October 2006. After the founder's death in 2016, the Kulturverein Hainfeld runs the museum.

The around 350 steins are arranged by manufactories and artists and tell of the use and significance of the vessels, from guild and student steins to ornate show pieces. In the same building, the Hainfeld Museum shows the town's history up to 1900 with figure stations and commemorates the 1888/89 unification congress of the Social Democrats in a dedicated room. A few steps away is the Bräustüberl of the Hainfeld brewery.
