About the museum
The Diocese of Eisenstadt founded its museum in 1980 to mark the 20th anniversary of its existence. For 44 years it was housed in the former Franciscan monastery on Joseph-Haydn-Gasse, where it collected church art from all over Burgenland.
In June 2024 the museum moved a few hundred meters into the Baroque Bergkirche (Haydnkirche) on the Oberberg in Eisenstadt. There it sits close to the grave of Joseph Haydn and the Calvary, and it is intended to strengthen the Oberberg as a cultural destination.
About 70 percent of the former holdings can be seen in the new presentation. The church treasury, which had been housed in the museum since 2018, is again on display in the Bergkirche. The Baroque sacristy is also newly accessible. The new site opened with an exhibition on the 100th anniversary of Saint Martin as patron saint of Burgenland.
