Temporary location. The main building on Museumgasse has been closed for renovation and conversion since December 2024. The museum can currently be visited at the Leinner-Haus (Ruster Straße 12–16) with the anniversary exhibition “The State Museum and Its Collections” (3 October 2026 to 26 September 2027); a second anniversary exhibition is running at the Austrian Jewish Museum.

About the museum

The Landesmuseum Burgenland came into being a few years after the federal state was founded in 1921. The Eisenstadt wine merchant and collector Sándor Wolf made the Leinner-Haus on Ruster Straße available to the state government as a provisional home, and the museum opened there on 14 September 1926. Its first director was the archaeologist Alphons Barb; the state bought the Leinner-Haus in 1930. From the outset the collection focused on prehistory and archaeology, regional history, folk culture, and geology and biology.

As space soon ran short, the museum moved in 1938/39 to the block of buildings between Museumgasse, Jerusalemplatz, Meierhofgasse and Sándor-Wolf-Gasse, which had long belonged to Jewish owners. After Sándor Wolf fled and was persecuted, the buildings were restituted after 1945 and bought by the state. Renovation and new construction followed in 1965, a reopening in 2006 and new permanent exhibitions in 2022.

Since December 2024 the main building on Museumgasse has been closed for extensive renovation; the listed building is being technically upgraded and made barrier-free. For its 100th anniversary the museum is temporarily returning to its first location: since 3 October 2026 it has been showing a selection of its collections in the Leinner-Haus, including a cave bear skeleton from Winden and a mastodon tusk. The operator is Kultur-Betriebe Burgenland GmbH.
