About the museum

Joseph Haydn bought the house on what is now Joseph Haydn-Gasse in 1766, while in the service of the Esterházy princes, and lived here until 1778 together with his wife Maria Anna Theresia. The property also included a small kitchen garden near the Bürgerspital, which has been replanted as the Haydn herb garden.

Together with the neighboring house, the so-called Frumwaldhaus, the building forms the Haydnzentrum in the Baroque town center. From 2008, restorers uncovered the colorfully striped wall paintings from Haydn's time in three of the five original living rooms; the work was funded by the Federal Monuments Office, the province of Burgenland and the EU. An inventory list drawn up after a house fire in 1776 served as the template for the furnishings, supplemented with period furniture from the Hofmobiliendepot.

Today the Kultur-Betriebe Burgenland operate the museum year-round. The permanent exhibition "Haydn@home" presents the composer as a homeowner, husband and musician; an extension is devoted to his instruments, operas and legacy. Salon concerts, fireside talks and an extensive children's program round out the offering.

Highlights

  • Haydn's original living rooms with uncovered striped wall paintings
  • Historic fortepiano from the Viennese workshop of Anton Walter
  • Octet table and organ console of the former Haydn organ from the Bergkirche
  • Baryton – favorite instrument of Prince Nikolaus I Esterházy
  • Haydn herb garden (May to September, freely accessible)

Permanent exhibitions

  • Haydn@home – Privates, Wissenswertes, Amüsantes – The reconstructed living rooms of the Haydn couple tell of the everyday life of the composer and his wife, of his works for noble ladies and of the origins of the string quartet.
  • Tonkünstler Joseph Haydn – Instrumente, Werke & musikalisches Erbe – Extension with listening stations on orchestral instruments, the octet table, organ console and baryton, as well as rooms on Haydn's operas and the preservation of his work to this day.
