About the museum
The Third Man Museum was opened in 2005 by the collector Gerhard Strassgschwandtner and the designer Karin Höfler. The two built up the museum without sponsors or subsidies and still run it themselves today, as collectors, curators and museum management in one.
The starting point is the British film "The Third Man", based on Graham Greene and shot in Vienna in 1948, which premiered in London in 1949 and became world-famous thanks to Anton Karas's zither music. Across more than 400 square metres, some 15 rooms show about 3,000 original objects: scripts, cameras used during filming, Karas's film zither, posters and programmes from premieres in over 20 countries, and hundreds of recordings of the "Harry Lime Theme". A historic cinema projector screens a short film excerpt.
A second focus is Vienna during the occupation 1945–1955: documents, signs and photos tell of life amid hunger, the black market, reconstruction and zone borders in a city administered by four powers. In 2023 the gravestone known from the cemetery scenes of the film joined the collection. In 2020 the museum received the Tourism Prize of the Viennese Chamber of Commerce.
