About the museum
The museum in Egg was founded in 1904 as a local history museum and is thus one of the oldest valley museums in Vorarlberg. After the holdings had been in storage for several years, it reopened in 1988 in the former school and municipal building of 1899, the Vereinshaus east of the parish church.
Since the new start, the museum has gradually moved away from the classic local-history-museum presentation. Instead of a fixed display, each year it shows one or two exhibitions relating to the Bregenzerwald, which are mostly created together with clubs, schools and institutions from the region and the state – most recently, for example, on the white Juppe (traditional skirt), on favourite pieces from its own storage, and on the cultural history of cowbells.
A large part of the collection dates from the founding period and has been supplemented by several bequests, for example from a local chronicler. For more than ten years it has been digitally catalogued as part of the museum documentation of the State of Vorarlberg. The museum is run by the volunteer association Egg Museum. After the 2026 exhibition, the museum left its previous premises; a fresh start in a renovated building has been announced for autumn 2027.
