About the museum
The Women's Museum Hittisau was founded in 2000 and opened on July 7, 2000; founding director was Elisabeth Stöckler, who from the beginning focused on women from the region. Since then the house has shown more than fifty exhibitions and proven that a women's museum also works in rural areas.
The building was designed by architects cukrowicz.nachbaur and built by the municipality of Hittisau. It combines the museum with the local fire department and rehearsal space of the music association: the museum space made of untreated local spruce hovers as a wooden cube over the fire department building and opens with a large glass front to the village center. The building won several architecture awards.
Thematically the museum addresses women's history and women's culture from cultural, social, art and architectural history perspectives, with particular focus on Bregenzerwald and Vorarlberg. There is no permanent exhibition; instead thematic exhibitions are often created in participatory processes. Additionally, a "dispersed collection" documents objects loaned to the museum only temporarily and then returned to their original context.
Particularly distinctive is the mediation: about twenty cultural mediators from the region with very different professions and life paths guide through exhibitions. Since 2018 an association operates the museum, with municipality of Hittisau and state of Vorarlberg represented on the board; director is Stefania Pitscheider Soraperra.
