About the museum

The Furthmühle owes its name to a shallow spot in the river Pram where the water could be crossed on foot. As early as 1371 it appears in the Schaunberg urbarium as a mill with a sawmill; today it is the last surviving of the former 43 mills along the Pram. For centuries it was a large operation: around 140 farmers from twelve municipalities brought it their grain, and there was also the sawmill and an agricultural estate with farmhands and maids. Around 1918, a small power station at the mill supplied parts of the village with electricity.

After a major fire in 1898 the mill was rebuilt; the miller's Art Nouveau villa also dates from the period that followed. In 1991 the last owner family sold the mill and sawmill to the municipality of Pram. The Kulturverein Furthmühle, founded in 1992, renovated the site and began demonstration operation in 1995; since 2001 the museum has belonged to the association of Upper Austrian open-air museums.

The museum shows milling and sawing technology from roughly 1900 to 1945 with the original equipment: from the grain cleaning through the roller floor and the plansifters to the flour floor. A four-metre-high water wheel once drove the mill and sawmill, supplemented by a 210 hp steam engine, diesel and electric motors from the 1920s and 1930s, and transmissions. The Venetian frame saw built around 1800, a water-driven single-blade frame saw, is still in operation. Bread is baked in the wood-fired oven in the bakehouse. Since 2026, interactive stations on water, heat, wind, electricity and sun have complemented the exhibition.
