About the museum
A first attempt to found a regional museum in Murau came in 1926 from the then town clerk; only the contents of one display case survived. The idea was realised in 1950 by the pharmacist Ernst Gasteiger, who exhibited objects from the surrounding area in his house and donated his collection to the municipality in 1953. In 1970 the local history museum moved to the Eggharthaus, and in 1975 finally to the former Capuchin monastery as the “Town and Crafts Museum”.
The monastery was built after 1607 on the “Eisenfeld”, which Anna Neumann had acquired; the Capuchins were called to Murau in the course of the Counter-Reformation. They left the monastery in 1968, and since 1975 it has belonged to the municipality. Since 1999 the house has been run by the Association for the Promotion of the Murau Crafts Museum.
On the ground floor, 19 crafts formerly based in the town can be seen, some in original workshops. Since 2016 the museum has been reorganised and partly redesigned, for example with areas on the history of trade, on the barber-surgeon and hairdresser, and on the Murtalbahn railway with the theme of winter sports. The house sees itself as an archive of historical knowledge and as a place for workshops, lectures and do-it-yourself activities.
