About the museum
The Natechnikum is located in the Stadlob district of the former municipality of Mariahof, which has been part of Neumarkt in der Steiermark since 2015. The house first opened in 2015 with a focus on 20th-century vehicles. After two years operations were interrupted for a conversion: the collection of the former private museum of Manfred Glettler from Altenmarkt near Fürstenfeld was added, and the concept changed from a vehicle museum to a “House of Diversity”. The former vivarium was turned into the exhibition building for this purpose.
According to the operators, the museum has been open to visitors again since August 2023; the official opening ceremony followed on 1 May 2024. The museum is privately owned; the exhibits come mostly from the Glettler collection, from the owner's own holdings and from private loans.
In 24 exhibition rooms the museum shows cars from the late 19th century to the 2000s, motorcycles and bicycles from the penny-farthing to the mountain bike, carriages, sleighs, tractors and agricultural machinery, as well as fire brigade and military sections. Recreated rooms such as a car workshop, a farmhouse parlour, a sewing room, a grocer's shop and a doctor's surgery illustrate life in Austria before and after the war. A separate section is devoted to finds from the Iron Age and antiquity from the region.
