About the museum
The museum was founded in 2005 on the initiative of Inge Auer, then chairwoman of the Metnitz customs group. The group, a non-profit association, has cultivated the customs of the Metnitz valley since 1998 and still looks after and runs the house today. In several exhibition areas it shows how faith, work and everyday life shaped the year of the people in the valley.
The section on religious customs displays the original crowns and star of the Metnitztal Kinisingen, which has been on the national list of intangible cultural heritage since 2014. There are also exhibits on Candlemas, Lent, Easter customs and rogation processions. Further rooms are devoted to the craft and work customs of craftsmen, farmers and farmhands, the customs surrounding birth, marriage and death, and hunting customs including poaching in the heavily wooded valley.
On the first floor, the path leads from flax to linen: a working original loom shows rural hand weaving. A film entitled "Bei uns dahoam" presents the traditions and customs of the valley. The museum is located at Birkenweg 8 in Metnitz.
