About the museum
The company eumig was founded in Vienna in 1919 and initially produced lighters and electrical supplies. It later developed radios as well as film and sound equipment and was internationally successful above all with cine cameras and projectors. In the 1980s, according to NÖ Museen, it was the largest film projector manufacturer in the world and, with around 7,000 employees, Austria’s largest private company; in 1981 the company’s history ended with insolvency.
Former employees founded a support association in 2009, which initially showed exhibitions in Guntramsdorf, Vienna and other places. Since 2010 it has been working with the market municipality of Wiener Neudorf, where the company headquarters once stood, on a museum of its own. The municipality provided rooms in the Old Fire Station and renewed the entrance, sanitary facilities and foyer in 2018/19; the portal is formed by a red “optical lens”. The official opening took place on 31 March 2019, followed by the museum quality seal in 2020.
The permanent exhibition “eumig im Spiegel der Zeit” (eumig in the Mirror of Time) links the company’s history with national and international contemporary history and shows matching products; the company’s social commitment is also a theme.
