About the museum
The house on Streleweg long belonged to the Lechleitner family ("Glaserhaus") and passed in 1993 to the municipality of Imst, which handed it on to the Imster Fasnacht association. It was dilapidated but listed because of its Lüftlmalerei (painted facade decoration), rare in Tyrol, and old vaulted rooms. It was renovated with more than 6,000 hours of voluntary work and funding from the municipality, the province, the federal government and private foundations.
Since 1998, the residential wing has served as an archive storing the many masks, costumes, instruments and equipment that are issued to active participants for each carnival. The former barn was converted into the museum according to plans by the architects Dietmar Ewerz and Martin Gamper; the exhibition concept is essentially the work of Imst film director Markus Heltschl.
The Schemenlaufen, a carnival custom that is part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage, is presented with clearly arranged masks in the mask room, almost life-size photographs of the mask types, panoramic projection, 3D photos and audio and video installations. In the former stable, a station shows in seven steps how a raw block of wood becomes a finished mask. The house received the Tyrolean Museum Prize in 2003 and the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality in 2008, 2012 and 2017.
