About the museum

The building on Waldgasse was still listed in 1848 as the manorial forester's house. In 1860 it was acquired by Theresia von Vogel, who in 1863, together with her second husband, had it converted into an arcaded house; the municipality of Kobersdorf later inherited the property. In the period of German West Hungary it was used as a customs house; after Burgenland was joined to Austria in 1921, it was rented out for various purposes, including the gendarmerie, a kindergarten and a midwife.

On the initiative of a school inspector, a small folklore museum was established there in 1971, showing mainly rural life, guilds, crafts and club life. In 2013 volunteers cleared out the house and catalogued the exhibits; after damp-proofing and redesign, the Heimathaus was renovated in 2014 and reopened on 14 May 2015 with a new permanent collection.

The exhibition portrays the municipality with its districts Kobersdorf, Oberpetersdorf and Lindgraben: in six rooms, more than 80 exhibits as well as maps and photographs are on display. Separate rooms are devoted to the history of the lordship, the coexistence of Catholics, Protestants and Jews, the Kobersdorf mineral water "Waldquelle", the castle plays and everyday village life through the years.
