About the museum
Inspired by the lawyer and local researcher Bruno Schimetschek (1908–2004), a local heritage museum was set up in Kirchschlag in 1984. It was first housed in the Hofhaus on the Hauptplatz, today's city office. Since 1995 the collection has been in the churchyard next to the late Gothic parish church, in a former school building that later also housed a savings bank and the municipal office. After Kirchschlag was granted town status in 2002, the Heimatmuseum became the Stadtmuseum (city museum).
Across two floors with 15 rooms, the museum presents the southeast of Lower Austria, with its main town Kirchschlag, in its geographical, historical and cultural character. It collects the ways of life, interests and memories of the local people: from rural life and imperial busts, the judge's staff and the tower clock, to special collections on fire brigades, radios and televisions, office technology, photo and film cameras, and toys. Two rooms are furnished as a kitchen and bedroom around 1900, and a separate exhibition is devoted to the Kirchschlag Passion plays.
The museum is run by a volunteer association that preserves historically and regionally significant objects and conveys them through exhibitions, guided tours and publications. Annually changing special exhibitions complement the permanent exhibition.
