About the museum

Franz Liszt was born on 22 October 1811 in Raiding, in the administration building of a farmstead of the Esterházy sheep farms, where his father Adam worked as an accountant. The older part of this manor farm, built around 1587, has survived as the birthplace. As early as Liszt's 70th birthday in 1881, a memorial plaque was unveiled in his presence, and a second gable with a relief portrait was added in 1925.

For the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1911, the local parish priest set up a first small museum in the room where he was born. After war damage, parts of the building had to be demolished; in 1961 the house underwent a general renovation, and in 1971 Prince Paul Esterházy donated it, together with the park, to the municipality. Since 1979/80 it has been open to the public as a branch of the Burgenland State Museum, and in 2011 it was the venue of the state exhibition “Lisztomania”.

In May 2025, Kultur-Betriebe Burgenland opened the redesigned permanent exhibition “Le Concert c’est moi”. It links the birthplace with a new Liszt Salon in the extension and a collection of historic keyboard instruments in the foyer of the concert hall opposite. A film and an audio guide app for children complement the offering.
