About the museum
The Anzenaumühle is the oldest property in the hamlet of Anzenau; its history can be traced without gaps from 1584. A first depiction is shown in a Merian engraving of around 1646. At the beginning of the 18th century a sawmill and a gypsum stamp mill were added to the farmhouse, mill and bakery; a bathhouse also belonged to the farmstead. In total, five trades were carried on here: farming, milling, sawing, black bread baking and gypsum processing. The mill with its bakery remained in operation until 1960.
The residential house reflects the building fabric of the early 18th century, followed by an extension more than three hundred years old. The famous black "Anzenaumühlner-Brot" was baked in the massive bread oven. The farm building, which had been demolished in 1962, was rebuilt in 1973.
In 1965 the Association of Upper Austrian Open-Air Museums restored the residential house and mill and set them up as a museum. Today the Heimatverein Bad Goisern looks after the house. Among the things to see are the large parlour with a green flamed tiled stove, the bakehouse with the "Schwarze Kuchl" (black kitchen), the small parlour with bread racks on the ceiling, and the milling room spanning the entire ground floor, in which several millstones are demonstrated. On selected days bread is baked again for visitors.
