About the museum

For the 700th anniversary of the market town of Neupölla, a cultural farmstead with a museum was opened on 24 August 1997 at Neupölla 10. In the old living wing, the art historian Friedrich Polleroß set up the "First Austrian Museum of Everyday History"; in place of the farm buildings, a hall and a meeting room were created. The museum is run by the market municipality of Pölla and the village renewal association Dorferneuerungsverein Neupölla.

Using the region between Zwettl and Horn as an example, the permanent exhibition describes how people in the countryside lived and worked – from the parish, manorial lordship and market community through a farmhouse parlour and the smoke kitchen to the tools in the attic. The dark sides of regional history are also deliberately addressed.

In 1998 a converted attic extended the space: through the family that owned the house from 1752 to 1955, the period from 1850 to 1950 is told, complemented by living alcoves from different eras. In 2000 the shoemaker's workshop of a Neupölla craftsman was added, and in 2016 a room on the bourgeois everyday culture of the Biedermeier period with portraits of personalities from the area.
