About the museum

The museum's roots reach back to the late 19th century: in 1898 work began on the archive of the municipality of Gars, from which the local museum emerged in 1902. As early as 1895 a museum for the composer Franz von Suppè, who spent his summers in the village from 1876 until his death, had been set up in Gars.

Today the Zeitbrücke Museum unites five major collections under one roof. It is located in the village centre on Kollergasse in a former school building that was erected in 1883/84 as a Bürgerschule (middle school). The Suppè memorial has been on view here since 2002, the collection “Handel im Wandel” (Trade in Transition) – originally shown at the Kiennast company and in the municipal office – since 2006.

The permanent exhibitions span the archaeology and settlement history of the Gars area, the Babenbergs and the guild system, up to the first Austrian trade museum with a grocer's shop around 1900 and an early self-service shop. Further rooms are devoted to the summer retreat, an old classroom and Falco's time in Gars. The house is run by the museum association Museumsverein Zeitbrücke Gars am Kamp, which also organises special exhibitions, lectures and an Advent market every year.
