About the museum
The Erzherzog Carl-Haus is one of the oldest houses in Deutsch-Wagram and was built before 1740. In June and July 1809 it served as headquarters for the Austrian commander-in-chief Archduke Charles, after his first quarters in Markgrafneusiedl had burned down. The building has been a listed monument since 1960.
The collection goes back to the local history museum founded in 1959 for the 700th anniversary, which was initially housed in Bahnhofstraße. After the architect Hansjörg Schweinhammer acquired the dilapidated house in 1984 and restored it with state funding, the Museumsgesellschaft Deutsch-Wagram opened the Heimat- und Napoleonmuseum here on 2 October 1993. Since 2007 a memorial room has commemorated Infantry Regiment No. 42; following a reorientation in 2023 the museum bears the name Napoleon- und Stadtmuseum.
The Napoleon Museum presents the course of the battle of 5 and 6 July 1809 with maps, battle paintings, portraits, weapons, uniform parts and finds from the battlefield; an interactive station reports on archaeological excavations at the planned S8 expressway. The Stadtmuseum leads from the first mention of Wagram in 1258 to its elevation to town status in 1985, with a smoke kitchen, a shoemaker's workshop, historic bicycles and the short-lived Deutsch-Wagram art ceramics.
The volunteer Museumsgesellschaft also looks after the railway museum at the station and the town archive.
