About the museum
The Tower Museum was established in 1984 in the roughly 500-year-old tower of the parish church of St. Martin. Since 1987 a second tower floor has been part of it, so that today two rooms are reached by spiral staircases. The church itself is among the oldest and largest in the region: parts of the nave are Romanesque, the chancel is Gothic, and the tower dates from the early 16th century. Since the Middle Ages Pillichsdorf was an ecclesiastical centre in the eastern Weinviertel and, until 1995, the seat of a deanery.
The exhibition shows more than 130 exhibits on geology, prehistory and early history, the Middle Ages and modern times. Among the most important pieces are a reconstructed moon idol from the early Iron Age (Hallstatt period, around 650 BC) and a restored Baroque clock mechanism from 1762.
Visitors are guided after registering by telephone; on request the bell level can also be visited or a church tour arranged.
