About the museum
The museum's roots go back to the early 1970s: in 1972 teachers at the Volksschule Konstanziagasse set up a room with objects on the history of Stadlau, and later items from Kagran and Aspern were added. In 1979 a museum association of its own was founded.
Committed citizens campaigned to save the dilapidated 1905 pump house of the Kagran volunteer fire brigade on Kagraner Platz from demolition. With the support of the City of Vienna it was renovated and opened as a district museum on 22 October 1983 – it is considered the youngest of the Viennese district museums.
Because the rooms soon proved too small, the neighbouring former station building of the steam tramway to Groß-Enzersdorf was added, which today is used mainly for special exhibitions. In 2003 both listed buildings were joined by a glass octahedron, which is also used for concerts because of its acoustics.
With documents, photographs and models, the permanent exhibition tells the history of the district's eight localities – seven former Marchfeld villages and the Kaisermühlen colony. Topics include the rowing clubs on the Alte Donau, market gardens, ship mills and housing around 1900. In front of the building, an open-air gallery displays further pieces.
