About the museum

The museum's foundation is the private collection of Christian Lingenhöle. The man from Bregenz, formerly the owner of a sports shop and a partner in the Damüls cable cars, gathered historic skis and winter sports objects over decades. Together with the municipality of Damüls and many volunteers, he opened the Vorarlberg FIS Ski Museum in 2013 in the "Kulisse Pfarrhof", the former rectory of the Walser village.

The permanent exhibition spans from the Scandinavian origins of skiing to the Vorarlberg pioneers such as Viktor Sohm, Georg Bilgeri, Hannes Schneider and Ernst Janner. A further focus is ski production, which at first lay in the hands of numerous wheelwright workshops throughout the country. Objects from successful Vorarlberg racers recall medals at the Olympic Games and World Championships; a visible storage area shows the breadth of the collection, including ski jumping and local skiing in Damüls.

Besides skis, the collection includes clothing, equipment, photographs, books and documents as well as some curiosities from the early days of the sport. On the second floor of the building, changing special exhibitions take place.

Since 2019 the association "Kulisse Pfarrhof – Freunde des Vorarlberger FIS Skimuseum Damüls" has looked after the building and the collection. In 2025 the association acquired the entire exhibition from Lingenhöle, thereby securing its continued existence; in the same year the museum received the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
