About the museum
The foundation of the house was laid by action and performance artist Wolfgang Flatz, born in Dornbirn in 1952: he left his home town an extensive donation and long-term loans from the years 1975 to 1999. These include the FLATZ Bar from 1996, ten so-called Physical Sculptures and a group of works from the cycle “Show Me a Hero and I'll Show You a Tragedy”.
The museum opened in 2009 on the second floor of Marktstraße 33, in the rooms of the former Alte Naturschau; it was inaugurated by Jan Hoet, the former director of documenta IX. The operator is the City of Dornbirn.
From 2013, changing photography exhibitions were added to the works by Flatz, including works by Helmut Newton, Martin Parr and Marina Abramović. In 2024 the city consistently realigned the house as a center for photography; the Flatz collection has been in storage since then, and the program consists of changing photo shows with accompanying art education.
