About the museum
The Kunstraum Dornbirn was founded in 1987 as a non-profit association to show and promote contemporary art. Since 2003 its exhibitions have been held in the former assembly hall of the Rüschwerke in the Stadtgarten.
The brick hall was built in 1893 on the premises of the Rüschwerke, a company that specialised in building turbines and assembled larger machines there. The works closed in 1984. Following an international landscape planning competition in 1999/2000, the old industrial site was transformed into an urban recreation area; important buildings such as the assembly hall were preserved, and next to the Kunstraum there now stands the inatura Erlebnis Naturschau.
The hall measures around 30 by 14 metres with a height of just over 11 metres and offers about 350 square metres of exhibition space. In its raw, original state it is well suited to room-filling installations. About three exhibitions are held each year, featuring established, internationally known artists as well as younger positions. There is no permanent exhibition.
