Heimatmuseum Oberstaufen

Local history museum in an Allgäu farmhouse of 1788, once home to hosiery weavers – with over 400 exhibits on the history of Oberstaufen.

Opening hoursAdmission from €4

About the museum

The museum is housed in a traditional Allgäu farmhouse dating from 1788, which has been largely preserved in its original condition. Besides farming, its residents earned extra income as hosiery weavers; stockings made here were sold until 1923. This is the origin of the name "Beim Strumpfar."

Today the entire house is used as a local history museum. More than 400 exhibits tell the story from the first documentary mention of the village in 868 to the present. On view are tools from farming and crafts, furnished farmhouse parlors and chambers, and the stocking weaver's room with wool bobbins, spinning wheel, twisting mill and an original stocking frame.

Separate sections are devoted to Johann Schroth, founder of the Schroth cure still practiced in Oberstaufen today, and to the Wiedra Collection with reverse glass paintings and sculptures of popular piety. The grounds around the house include an alpine pasture section, beehives, a pond with a stream, and alpine, herb and fruit gardens. In addition, the Bentele exhibition in the Alpe Vögels-Berg is accessible during the museum's opening hours.
