About the museum

The Oberlienz open-air museum was established from 1964 as a complement to the rural collection at Schloss Bruck in Lienz. The first building, in 1964/65, was a farrier's and horseshoeing forge from Thal in the municipality of Assling, which was moved here and rebuilt with working equipment; further buildings followed in 1969.

Today the complex comprises seven structures, five buildings and two mills, spread along the Schleinitzbach in the village centre. They include the last surviving flax-breaking house in Oberlienz, a water-powered wool carding mill, the municipal sawmill of 1834, the Zoppmühle and the Lamprecht-Oberragger mill. Two granaries, the Haiglkasten from the 17th century and the Moserkasten of 1778, show the construction methods and painting of earlier times.

The museum is part of the “Vom alten Leben” (About Old Ways of Life) theme trail, whose panels at the stations explain rural life, crafts and the use of water power.
