About the museum
The core of the Stubenhaus at the Kammerlanderhof in Thurn, on the Lienz valley floor, dates from around 1500 and was first mentioned in a document in 1545. It is built of stone and solid log construction and has largely survived unaltered over the centuries. The building is a listed monument and stands as testimony to a harsh mountain-farming way of life in East Tyrol.
Since 2001 the association "s’ Kammerland – Kulturinitiative Thurn" has been looking after the restoration, preservation and revival of the farm. Among other things, it had the facade repaired, the roof re-covered with wooden shingles and the farm garden restored. Today the farm serves both as a small folk-life museum and as a venue for concerts, readings, exhibitions and the Advent afternoon.
The rooms show the everyday rural life of times past: the Rauchkuchl with its open hearth, a grain store built into the house with chests and tools, a small sleeping chamber with furniture from around 1900, and in the attic a shoemaker's workshop, textile tools, old skis and a still-working loom.
