About the museum
The Wurzerhof in the Winkeltal near Außervillgraten has been documented since 1433 and has been farmed by the Leiter family for seven generations. It was formerly called "Wurz am Sand"; a flood destroyed large parts of the complex in 1882, and it was then rebuilt in its present, almost unchanged form. At times 20 to 30 people lived and worked here in farming, forestry, sawmill, mill, forge and workshop.
The ensemble of a single-structure farmhouse (Einhof), farm chapel, wash house with smoking chamber, sawmill, grain mill and other buildings has been under monument protection since 2001. With the support of the Villgrater Heimatpflegeverein (local heritage association), the buildings, some of which had been damaged by the flood, were restored, including the mill, wash house and chapel. The water-powered triple mill grinds grain again, bacon and sausages are still smoked in the wash house, and the sawmill of 1876 operates as a Venetian frame saw.
In the house and the outbuildings, more than 500 old craft objects can be seen, including the tools from the "Machlkammer", where carpenters, shoemakers and joiners made their own tools. The farm is at once an organic farm and a self-catering holiday home; in the summer half-year it can be visited on Fridays, either on your own or with a guided tour.
