About the museum
The Graz children’s museum FRida & freD opened in November 2003 in the Augarten, a park on the left bank of the Mur. The building was designed by the architects Hemma Fasch and Jakob Fuchs; it was built under great time pressure in just over ten months. With steel beams, concrete, glass and a grey plastic film meant to resemble tree bark, it blends into the park landscape. In 2006 it received the first Austrian Architecture Prize.
The concept follows the principle “Hands On – Minds On”: children between about three and twelve years old are encouraged to help shape exhibitions, try things out and experiment. The large hands-on exhibitions change roughly every year and cover topics from architecture to chocolate to mobility. Since 2010, a laboratory with topics such as water, optics and genetics has expanded the offering, along with theatre, workshops and holiday programmes.
The museum is run by KIMUS Graz GmbH.
