About the museum
The Neue Galerie came into being in 1941, when the Landesbildergalerie of the Styrian provincial museum Joanneum was divided: the older holdings went to the Alte Galerie, the works from the 19th century onwards to the Neue Galerie. From the 1960s the museum developed into a centre for current art. Formative were the Trigon biennials (1963–1992) and the International Painting Weeks in Styria (1966–1992), which directed attention to Austria and its neighbouring countries.
Since the 1990s the Neue Galerie has worked increasingly internationally. From 1992 to 2011 Peter Weibel, as chief curator, together with the director Christa Steinle, shaped the programme. In 2011 the museum moved into the newly designed Joanneumsviertel, where in the neo-Baroque museum building on Neutorgasse it has more than 2,000 square metres of exhibition space.
The collection comprises around 70,000 works – painting, graphic art, posters, sculpture, photography and video – from the Biedermeier period through Realism, Art Nouveau and Modernism to Viennese Actionism, media art and conceptual art. A major purchase in 2008 established a focus on the Styrian artist Günter Brus; the BRUSEUM opened on 26 November 2011 and shows his work in a permanent exhibition area. The Neue Galerie holds the Austrian Museum Seal of Quality.
