About the museum
DOCK 20 is an art space of the municipality of Lustenau and goes back to the Galerie Hollenstein, founded in 1971. The impetus came from the estate of the Lustenau painter Stephanie Hollenstein (1886–1944): after the death of her two sisters, more than 1,200 paintings, watercolours, drawings and sketches, as well as letters, documents and books, passed to the municipality. On the plot on Pontenstraße, where the artist's parental home once stood, a gallery was built to make the estate accessible and at the same time to show contemporary art.
Following a major renovation, since 2017 the building has had an exhibition space of 170 square metres, hosting changing projects by contemporary artists, often with a connection to the place. Each exhibition is accompanied by a free programme of workshops, talks, guided tours, readings and performances. In 2020 the institution received its current name: DOCK 20 alludes to the architecture of the Ponten block, and at the same time the façade and entrance area were redesigned. In the entrance, a neon-orange mistletoe branch, a ceiling piece by the Vorarlberg artist Ferdinand Ruef, grows into the interior.
Since 2016 the collection has been housed in a former meeting room of the Stickereiverband (embroidery association), which serves as a visible storage facility and workroom and can be viewed after registration. Alongside the fully digitised and continually processed Hollenstein estate, it includes works from the estate of the Lustenau artist Karl Schwärzler (1907–1990) and a growing collection of contemporary art. The institution explicitly takes a critical approach to Hollenstein's biography, including her involvement with National Socialism.
