Gottscheer Gedenkstätte

About the museum

The Gottscheer Memorial in Graz-Mariatrost combines a sacred space with an adjoining exhibition area. It commemorates the Gottscheers, a German-speaking ethnic group in present-day Slovenia who were resettled in 1941 and expelled from Yugoslavia after 1945, and who today live scattered across Austria, the USA and Canada.

A large exhibition room on the first and second basement levels of the church presents the roughly 650-year history of the Gottschee language island. Gottscheer costumes, handicrafts, a reconstructed farmhouse parlour, documents and pictures show the cultural identity of this close-knit community. A digital museum complements the exhibition.

The memorial is run by the Verein Gottscheer Gedenkstätte, which also publishes the association's newsletter of the same name.
