About the museum
The history of Schloss Tollet goes back to 1170, when a first fortification was built under Ortlof von Tollet. In the 14th century the complex passed to the Jörger family, who rose to become one of the most important noble families in the country. Their Protestant faith led to their decline in the 17th century and to the sale of the castle to the governor Adam Count Herberstorff.
Many changes of ownership were followed by extensive renovations and alterations under the Revertera family. In 2002 a real estate company acquired the castle and converted parts of it into apartments.
The museum “Kulturama Schloss Tollet” was created after extensive renovation work in the run-up to the Upper Austrian State Exhibition “Reformation and Renaissance” and opened on 23 April 2009. It mainly shows changing special exhibitions on a wide variety of subjects; for the State Exhibition there was an accompanying exhibition on the Jörger von Tollet. Alongside its exhibition activities, the museum association is working on re-cataloguing its exhibits and organises a cultural programme at the castle every year.
