About the museum

The local history museum is located in the farmhouse of the farmer Simon Koch, the last historic building in the centre of Berwang. The oldest date on the house is 1733. The municipality acquired the property in 1988, and a small museum was set up in it in 1999. Since 2001, Hanni and Jakob Sprenger have designed and run the house, which has grown steadily through donations and a great deal of voluntary work.

On the ground floor, two parlours, a kitchen with an iron stove, a dairy room and a bedroom show farmhouse living in the time of the farm's owner; there are also a weaving room for processing wool and flax, a cobbler's workshop, a smithy with a field forge and a room with historic toys. On the first floor there is a washroom, a home workshop and the threshing floor with farm implements, rope-maker's equipment and a replica of the old church tower clock.

On the third level, Berwang's clubs document their history, and advertising graphics and photos recall the early tourism in the village. In summer the house comes to life: baking, butter churning and weaving take place in the museum kitchen, and guests try yeast pastries, waffles and farmhouse bread with fresh butter.
