About the museum
The teacher and local historian Karl Zimmel (1862–1927) already wanted to set up a local history museum in Litschau in the interwar period but was unable to realise the plan. Only in 1972 was a small collection created as part of the anniversary celebrations of the Waldviertler Sparkasse. On 25 May 1986 the museum reopened in a new design.
It is housed on the upper floor of a building on Stadtplatz that formerly served as the town's post office. On display are farmhouse living rooms with everyday objects as well as a classroom recalling the time of head teacher Zimmel. Photographs document the development of the town and its well-known personalities.
One room is dedicated to the Schrammel family of musicians, regarded as the founders of Viennese Schrammel music and connected with Litschau. Sheet music, photos and instruments commemorate Kaspar Schrammel and his sons Johann and Josef. Those wishing to learn more about the town will also find a knitwear museum, a parish museum and a Waldviertel Railway museum in Litschau.
