About the museum
The collector Andreas Zahrl spent years gathering old computer systems and video games and opened his collection to the public in Kautzen in August 2020. The museum was set up in a former stable and is run by a non-profit association.
The exhibition covers three decades, from 1977 to 1995. It begins with the "trinity" of 1977: the TRS-80, PET 2001 and Apple II; other brands include Commodore, Atari, Sony, Nintendo and Sega. On about 35 square meters, visitors can trace the development from the early home computer to the end of the home computer era.
A special feature of the house: touching is explicitly allowed, the devices are there to be tried out. The association runs a mailbox (BBS), provides equipment for film productions, shows parts of the collection at game fairs and LAN parties across Austria, and works with schools, for example with electronics kits and programming games for young people.
