About the museum
The museum dates back to 1876, when Baron Schwarz von Senborn, director of the 1873 Vienna World's Fair, founded a collection in the village. Some pieces still date from this early period. Today the museum is housed in the former manor house of a wire-drawing mill, where iron wire was produced from the 16th century and scythes from 1853 to 1875.
Particularly worth seeing is the Roman Room with finds from excavations at the Roman posting station Gabromagus, including a well-preserved bronze jug from the 2nd century, said to be unique in Austria. Other areas show the tools of woodcutters, objects from the old pharmacy of Windischgarsten, folk culture and rural art, as well as a farm smithy and tools of shovel makers, rake makers, shoemakers, carpenters, joiners, turners and coopers.
On the upper floor, under the motto "Small Stones – Great Adventures", is a collection of stones, fossils and minerals from the region; there are also an old classroom and a multipurpose room for video presentations, including a film by Sepp Forcher about the development of the Garstnertal valley. The Bürgerzimmer has a small library and old photographs, and an archive with a local history library is available. The museum is run by the Heimat- und Museumsverein Windischgarsten.
